Tattoos of the Past!

To help my blog here get some content I’m going to post some reading material.  Since this web log is based on my tattooing venture, my posts will mainly be about tattooing but I will also enclude some posts about my peeves.

So, for today, lets talk a bit about tattoo’s of the past.  It it not known for sure exactly how long the art of tattooing dates back however, “Ötzi the Iceman” was found in 1991 frozen in a glacier in the Alps.  Now, Otzi lived over 5000 years ago and this dude didn’t just dabble in tattooing just to impress the chicks or to enlarge his tough guy image.  Otzi had 57 tattoos!

Most of them consisted of dots and lines, but he had one design which remains a popular tattoo choice to this day; a cross.  Now, I researched tattoo history probably more than religious history so I have no idea how old the symbol cross is, but he had it tattooed on him.

I’ve read that tattooing existed in Japanese culture as far back as 12,000 years ago.    These dates in history are proven, but tattoos may have existed a long time before any of the above examples.

Since the beginning of tattooing time, marking skin has been documented all over the world with methods and meanings changing according to geographic region.  For example,  in the early 10th century, during the Christianization in Europe, tattoos were considered elements of witchcraft and were legally prohibited, even though some Scandinavian tribes were tattooed from fingernails to neck.

For, other tribes around the world, tattoos represented pride, honor and success(Borneo Headhunters had tattoos which was directly related to the number of human heads he had taken).

Tattooing over the years have different methods and meanings.  Whether they are created using hand tools of bone, tusks, turtle shells, wood, or made with a modern rotary or neumatic machine, tattoos have deep meaning to those who get them,

and also to those to give them!
